Abstract Artificial intelligence has increasingly become an important technological resource for improving research and development processes across academic, industrial, scientific, and technological environments. Conventional research and development activities often require extensive time for literature analysis, data processing, experimentation, simulation, product evaluation, and decision-making. Artificial intelligence models can support these activities by automating repetitive tasks, identifying complex patterns, generating predictions, optimizing experimental processes, and assisting researchers in interpreting large datasets. This study examines the role of artificial intelligence models in improving research and development processes, with particular emphasis on machine learning, natural language processing, predictive analytics, intelligent optimization, and automated knowledge discovery. A qualitative descriptive research design based on secondary scholarly literature was adopted, and thematic analysis was used to identify major applications, benefits, and implementation challenges.
The findings indicate that AI can improve research efficiency by accelerating information discovery, supporting experimental design, enhancing data interpretation, predicting research outcomes, and optimizing resource allocation. AI-based models can also facilitate collaboration between researchers and computational systems by providing decision-support capabilities throughout different stages of the research lifecycle. However, implementation challenges include data quality, model reliability, computational requirements, explainability, intellectual property, cybersecurity, research integrity, and the need for appropriate human oversight. The study emphasizes that AI should function as an augmentation mechanism rather than a complete replacement for human scientific judgment. The analysis concludes that responsible integration of artificial intelligence can significantly enhance research and development productivity, innovation capacity, analytical precision, and evidence-based decision-making.
