Next Generation Software Architectures for Smart Computing Applications

Abstract The rapid development of artificial intelligence, edge computing, cloud platforms, Internet of Things technologies, distributed systems, and data-intensive applications is transforming the architecture of contemporary software systems. Smart computing applications require architectures capable of processing heterogeneous data, supporting real-time decision-making, maintaining interoperability, adapting to changing workloads, and delivering secure and reliable services. Traditional centralized architectures may face limitations when applications require low latency, distributed intelligence, continuous availability, and dynamic resource allocation.
This study examines next-generation software architectures for smart computing applications, with particular attention to cloud-edge architectures, microservices, event-driven systems, serverless computing, distributed intelligence, service-oriented architecture, modular design, adaptive architectures, and intelligent resource management. A qualitative descriptive research design based on secondary academic literature was employed to examine the characteristics and contributions of these architectural approaches.
The analysis indicates that next-generation architectures can improve scalability, flexibility, responsiveness, fault isolation, deployment efficiency, and data-processing capabilities. Edge computing reduces the need to transfer all information to centralized cloud environments, potentially improving response times for latency-sensitive applications. Microservices enable independent development and scaling of application components, while event-driven architectures support asynchronous processing and real-time interactions. Serverless approaches can further simplify infrastructure management for suitable workloads. Nevertheless, these architectures introduce challenges involving distributed-system complexity, interoperability, cybersecurity, data consistency, observability, governance, energy consumption, vendor dependence, and technical expertise.
The study concludes that next-generation software architecture should be designed as an adaptive and distributed ecosystem rather than as a fixed technical structure. Successful smart computing applications require coordinated architectural decisions involving cloud and edge resources, modular services, intelligent automation, secure data management, continuous monitoring, and adaptive resource allocation. Future research should investigate self-adaptive architectures, AI-assisted architectural optimization, sustainable computing, decentralized intelligence, and integrated cloud-edge environments.
