| Abstract | The increasing scale and complexity of modern software applications have created a growing demand for computing models capable of distributing processing, storage, communication, and application services across multiple interconnected resources. Distributed computing provides an important foundation for advanced software applications by enabling computational tasks to be executed across networked computers, cloud infrastructures, edge environments, and specialized processing nodes. This study examines distributed computing models for advanced software applications, focusing on client-server computing, peer-to-peer systems, cluster computing, grid computing, cloud computing, edge computing, distributed databases, microservices, event-driven architectures, and hybrid distributed environments. A qualitative descriptive research design based on secondary academic literature was adopted to examine how distributed computing models contribute to scalability, performance, reliability, flexibility, resource utilization, and service availability. The analysis indicates that distributed computing enables applications to divide computational workloads and data management responsibilities across multiple resources, thereby reducing dependence on centralized infrastructure. Cluster and cloud models provide scalable computational capacity, while edge computing supports localized processing for latency-sensitive applications. Microservices and event-driven models provide modular mechanisms for distributing application functionality across services. Distributed databases and replication mechanisms further support data availability and fault tolerance. However, distributed computing introduces challenges involving network latency, synchronization, consistency, fault tolerance, security, interoperability, resource coordination, monitoring, and architectural complexity. The study concludes that successful distributed software applications require careful coordination between computational resources, communication mechanisms, data-management strategies, and application architecture. Effective distributed systems should incorporate fault-tolerant design, scalable resource allocation, secure communication, service monitoring, data consistency mechanisms, and adaptive workload management. Future distributed computing environments are expected to increasingly integrate artificial intelligence, edge-cloud collaboration, autonomous orchestration, decentralized processing, and energy-aware resource management to support highly scalable and intelligent software applications. |
