| Abstract | Digital innovation has become a central component of contemporary organizational development, transforming how enterprises design, deliver, manage, and continuously improve software-enabled services. However, rapid technological expansion can generate significant environmental, economic, technical, and social pressures when software systems are developed without long-term sustainability considerations. Sustainable software engineering provides an opportunity to address these concerns by integrating resource efficiency, maintainability, scalability, security, resilience, responsible technology use, and lifecycle thinking into software development practices. This study examines software engineering practices for sustainable digital innovation and proposes a conceptual framework connecting sustainable requirements engineering, architecture design, development practices, quality assurance, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement. A conceptual and descriptive research design was adopted through thematic analysis of scholarly literature addressing sustainable software engineering, green computing, software architecture, DevOps, cloud computing, software quality, technical debt, lifecycle management, digital transformation, and responsible innovation. The analysis indicates that sustainable digital innovation depends on coordinated engineering decisions across the complete software lifecycle rather than isolated environmental optimization activities. Sustainable architecture can reduce unnecessary resource consumption, modular development can improve maintainability, automated testing can reduce rework, and cloud resource optimization can improve computational efficiency. DevOps and continuous delivery practices can support sustainable development by enabling incremental improvements and rapid feedback. However, sustainability also introduces challenges involving measurement complexity, organizational resistance, legacy infrastructure, technical debt, skills shortages, competing business priorities, security requirements, and the difficulty of balancing short-term performance with long-term sustainability. The proposed framework integrates sustainability objectives into requirements, architecture, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance. It emphasizes measurable resource efficiency, software longevity, adaptability, responsible infrastructure utilization, and continuous assessment. The study concludes that sustainable digital innovation requires organizations to move beyond short-term software delivery toward lifecycle-oriented engineering strategies that balance technological performance with environmental, economic, and social considerations. Future research should investigate sustainability-aware software metrics, AI-assisted green development, energy-efficient architectures, sustainable DevOps, lifecycle carbon assessment, circular software practices, and intelligent systems capable of dynamically optimizing computational resources while maintaining reliability, security, usability, and business value. |
