Artificial Intelligence Integration in Modern Software Development

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed modern software development by introducing intelligent capabilities into requirements engineering, software design, source-code generation, testing, debugging, maintenance, documentation, project estimation, deployment, and operational monitoring. The integration of machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, code intelligence, and generative AI has changed the traditional software development lifecycle from a predominantly human-driven process toward an increasingly collaborative human–AI development environment. Recent systematic reviews indicate that AI techniques are being investigated across almost every software engineering phase, while large language models have substantially expanded research on code generation, code understanding, testing, documentation, and maintenance.
This study examines the integration of AI into modern software development and proposes a comprehensive conceptual framework for AI-assisted software engineering. A conceptual and descriptive research design was adopted using thematic analysis of scholarly literature addressing AI-enabled requirements engineering, intelligent design, automated programming, predictive quality assurance, software testing, defect prediction, code understanding, DevOps, maintenance, project estimation, and software governance. The analysis demonstrates that AI can support software development by automating repetitive tasks, identifying patterns in software repositories, generating implementation suggestions, predicting defects, improving documentation, assisting debugging, and supporting project-level decision-making.
Recent research also indicates that AI-assisted development is increasingly associated with changes in developer roles, organizational practices, and software engineering workflows. However, AI integration introduces significant challenges involving hallucinated code, security vulnerabilities, biased recommendations, inadequate contextual understanding, intellectual-property concerns, privacy, explainability, technical debt, overreliance, and difficulties in validating AI-generated artifacts. Systematic research on AI-based software engineering has particularly identified testing, software quality, and data management as important challenges.
The proposed framework therefore emphasizes human oversight, AI-assisted development, independent validation, secure software practices, continuous monitoring, and governance throughout the software lifecycle. The study concludes that AI should not be treated as an autonomous replacement for software engineers but as an intelligent augmentation layer that strengthens human capabilities while preserving accountability and quality control. Sustainable integration requires organizations to combine AI productivity with rigorous engineering practices, independent testing, security controls, transparent decision-making, and continuous learning.
