Advanced Computing Architectures for Future Software Systems

| Abstract | The rapid evolution of digital technologies is transforming the architectural foundations on which future software systems are designed, deployed, and operated. Conventional centralized computing architectures are increasingly complemented by heterogeneous, distributed, intelligent, and specialized computing models capable of addressing requirements involving low latency, massive data processing, scalability, energy efficiency, security, and real-time responsiveness. Cloud computing, edge and fog computing, serverless architectures, heterogeneous accelerators, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, and quantum computing are becoming important components of future computing environments. Recent research describes the edge-cloud continuum as a multi-layered architecture designed to combine decentralized edge resources with centralized cloud infrastructure to support low-latency and scalable services. This study examines advanced computing architectures for future software systems and proposes an integrated architectural framework that combines cloud, edge, intelligent, heterogeneous, and emerging quantum computing resources. A conceptual and descriptive research design was adopted using secondary scholarly literature concerning distributed computing, edge-cloud architectures, heterogeneous computing, AI-enabled systems, serverless computing, and quantum software architecture. The analysis indicates that future software systems require architectural models capable of dynamically selecting computational resources according to workload characteristics, latency requirements, security constraints, energy conditions, and application objectives. Edge computing can reduce latency by moving computation closer to data sources, while cloud infrastructure provides elastic centralized resources. Heterogeneous computing further enables workloads to be distributed across CPUs, GPUs, DPUs, accelerators, and specialized processing resources. Recent research highlights the growing relevance of SmartNICs and data processing units for offloading and parallel data-processing workloads. Quantum computing introduces another architectural dimension, requiring new software abstractions, design patterns, modeling techniques, and hybrid classical-quantum architectures. The study also identifies challenges related to architectural heterogeneity, interoperability, resource management, security, data placement, energy consumption, programming complexity, vendor dependence, and quantum-classical integration. |
