Abstract The rapid evolution of smart computing has transformed conventional software systems into intelligent, adaptive, connected, and context-aware digital environments. Smart computing solutions increasingly combine software engineering, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, Internet of Things technologies, edge computing, data analytics, automation, and intelligent decision-making. These systems require software engineering approaches that can accommodate changing requirements, heterogeneous computing environments, continuous data streams, intelligent behavior, and complex interactions between humans and machines. This study examines software engineering approaches for developing reliable, scalable, secure, adaptive, and intelligent smart computing solutions. A conceptual descriptive research design was adopted using secondary literature covering software engineering, intelligent systems, agile development, DevOps, cloud computing, edge computing, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, software architecture, requirements engineering, testing, security, and continuous software improvement. The analysis identifies requirements engineering, modular architecture, agile development, intelligent automation, continuous integration and deployment, cloud-edge coordination, quality assurance, security engineering, interoperability, monitoring, and adaptive maintenance as major components of smart computing software development.
An integrated Software Engineering Framework for Smart Computing Solutions is proposed to connect requirements analysis, architecture design, intelligent integration, iterative development, testing, deployment, monitoring, feedback, and continuous optimization. The analysis indicates that smart computing software requires greater adaptability than traditional software because intelligent applications operate in dynamic environments and frequently depend on changing data and computational conditions. Agile and iterative approaches can support incremental development, while DevOps can strengthen collaboration between development and operational teams. Microservices and modular architectures can support scalability and independent deployment, while cloud and edge computing can distribute computational workloads according to application requirements. Artificial intelligence can further enhance software functionality through prediction, classification, automation, recommendation, and adaptive decision-making.
