| Abstract | Smart manufacturing has emerged as a major component of industrial transformation because manufacturing organizations increasingly integrate digital technologies into production, maintenance, quality management, supply-chain coordination, and operational decision-making. The transition from conventional manufacturing toward intelligent production environments is supported by technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, edge computing, digital twins, robotics, industrial analytics, cyber-physical systems, and advanced automation. These technologies enable manufacturing organizations to collect real-time information, monitor equipment, optimize production processes, predict failures, improve quality, reduce resource consumption, and respond rapidly to changing market requirements. However, the successful implementation of smart manufacturing requires more than technological investment because organizations must address interoperability, cybersecurity, workforce capabilities, legacy infrastructure, data governance, implementation costs, and organizational readiness. This study examines smart manufacturing systems for future industrial transformation and evaluates their contribution to operational efficiency, production flexibility, predictive maintenance, quality improvement, resource optimization, supply-chain responsiveness, and sustainable manufacturing. A qualitative descriptive research design based on secondary academic literature was adopted. The study analyzes major technologies associated with smart manufacturing, including industrial Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, digital twins, robotics, cloud and edge computing, cyber-physical systems, big data analytics, and automated production systems. The analysis demonstrates that integrated smart manufacturing architectures can improve production visibility and support data-driven decision-making. IoT-enabled systems facilitate real-time monitoring, while machine-learning models support predictive maintenance and anomaly detection. Digital twins provide virtual representations of production systems that can be used for simulation and optimization. Robotics and intelligent automation can increase precision, productivity, and consistency. Despite these advantages, organizations may encounter challenges involving high implementation costs, cybersecurity threats, technology integration, data-quality problems, skills shortages, resistance to organizational change, and dependence on specialized platforms. |
