Industrial Automation Frameworks for Improved Manufacturing Performance

Author(s) Prof. Sergio Terzi

Abstract Industrial automation has become a central mechanism for improving manufacturing performance, operational consistency, production flexibility, quality management, and resource utilization. The rapid integration of industrial robotics, programmable logic controllers, industrial Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber-physical systems, digital twins, supervisory control systems, edge computing, and industrial analytics has created increasingly intelligent production environments. Traditional manufacturing systems often rely on isolated equipment, manual monitoring, fixed production schedules, and reactive maintenance practices, which may restrict their ability to respond effectively to complex and rapidly changing industrial conditions. Industrial automation frameworks provide structured approaches for integrating physical equipment, control systems, communication networks, analytical platforms, and human decision-making into coordinated manufacturing environments. This study examines industrial automation frameworks for improving manufacturing performance and evaluates their contribution to productivity, quality, equipment utilization, process flexibility, predictive maintenance, resource efficiency, safety, and operational decision-making.
A qualitative descriptive research design based on secondary academic literature was adopted. The study examines programmable automation, robotic automation, IoT-enabled automation, cyber-physical production systems, AI-assisted automation, digital-twin-supported control, edge-based industrial computing, and integrated manufacturing execution environments. The analysis indicates that advanced automation frameworks can improve production performance by enabling real-time monitoring, automated control, predictive analysis, intelligent scheduling, quality inspection, and adaptive process optimization. Industrial IoT provides continuous equipment information, while artificial intelligence supports predictive and analytical decision-making. Robotics can improve production consistency and precision, whereas digital twins enable virtual experimentation and process optimization. Edge computing can reduce response latency by processing industrial data closer to production equipment. However, automation implementation is associated with challenges involving capital investment, legacy equipment, interoperability, cybersecurity, workforce skills, system complexity, maintenance requirements, and organizational resistance.
