| Abstract | Energy optimization has become a critical engineering objective because industrial facilities, power systems, buildings, transportation technologies, and thermal processing operations consume substantial quantities of energy. Increasing energy costs, environmental concerns, resource limitations, decarbonization requirements, and the demand for improved system performance have encouraged engineers to develop advanced thermal management and optimization approaches. Thermal engineering provides a scientific and engineering foundation for understanding heat transfer, thermodynamic performance, energy conversion, thermal storage, cooling, heating, and waste-heat utilization. This study examines advanced thermal engineering methods for energy optimization and evaluates their contribution to energy efficiency, thermal performance, resource utilization, emissions reduction, system reliability, and operational sustainability. A qualitative descriptive research design based on secondary academic literature was adopted to analyze major thermal engineering strategies, including advanced heat exchangers, heat recovery systems, thermal energy storage, phase-change materials, waste-heat recovery, combined heat and power, thermodynamic optimization, computational fluid dynamics, intelligent thermal control, heat pumps, and artificial intelligence-based energy management. The analysis indicates that advanced thermal engineering methods can improve energy utilization by reducing thermal losses, recovering otherwise wasted heat, optimizing heat-transfer processes, improving equipment performance, and coordinating thermal resources with changing operational conditions. Heat recovery systems can capture energy from exhaust gases, industrial processes, and cooling systems and redirect it toward useful heating or power generation applications. Advanced heat exchangers can improve heat-transfer effectiveness while reducing size, pressure losses, and material requirements. Thermal energy storage can address temporal mismatches between energy supply and demand, particularly in renewable energy and industrial heating applications. Phase-change materials provide high energy-storage density and can contribute to temperature regulation and thermal buffering. Computational fluid dynamics and thermodynamic modeling enable engineers to evaluate thermal behavior before physical implementation and identify opportunities for design optimization. Artificial intelligence and data-driven control methods can further improve thermal-system operation by predicting demand, identifying inefficiencies, and adjusting operating conditions dynamically. |
