Advanced Simulation Techniques for Engineering System Analysis

Author(s) Prof. Dr. Tamás Bányai

Abstract Engineering systems have become increasingly complex because of interconnected physical components, nonlinear behavior, dynamic operating conditions, uncertain environments, digital technologies, and growing performance requirements. Conventional analytical methods are often insufficient for evaluating such systems when interactions among variables become highly complicated. Advanced simulation techniques provide engineers with controlled computational environments in which system behavior can be represented, analyzed, tested, and optimized before implementation. This study examines advanced simulation techniques for engineering system analysis and evaluates their applications in structural engineering, manufacturing, energy systems, transportation, robotics, aerospace, industrial automation, and infrastructure management. A conceptual descriptive research design based on secondary academic and technical literature was adopted. The analysis focuses on discrete-event simulation, continuous simulation, agent-based modeling, Monte Carlo simulation, finite element simulation, computational fluid dynamics, system dynamics, digital twins, hybrid simulation, optimization-based simulation, and artificial-intelligence-supported simulation. The findings indicate that simulation has evolved from a specialized analytical technique into an integrated engineering decision-support capability.
Advanced simulation enables engineers to investigate complex system behavior without exposing physical systems to unnecessary risks or costs. It allows alternative designs, operating strategies, failure conditions, environmental scenarios, and maintenance policies to be evaluated systematically. Discrete-event simulation is particularly useful for manufacturing and logistics systems where activities occur according to identifiable events. Continuous simulation is appropriate for systems whose state changes continuously over time, including thermal, mechanical, hydraulic, and energy processes. Agent-based modeling can represent systems composed of interacting autonomous entities and is useful for transportation, logistics, human behavior, and distributed engineering environments. Monte Carlo simulation provides an effective approach for uncertainty and risk analysis by repeatedly sampling uncertain variables and estimating the distribution of possible outcomes. Finite element simulation remains essential for evaluating stresses, strains, deformation, vibration, thermal response, fatigue, and failure in engineering structures and components.
