Smart Infrastructure Models Using Advanced Engineering Technologies

Author(s) Andy Buchanan
Country New Zealand
Abstract Smart infrastructure represents a transformative approach to planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining physical infrastructure through the integration of advanced engineering technologies. Internet of Things devices, artificial intelligence, digital twins, cloud computing, advanced sensing, geographic information systems, robotics, automation, and data analytics increasingly support infrastructure management and decision-making. This paper examines smart infrastructure models using advanced engineering technologies through a conceptual and literature-based approach.
The study focuses on intelligent infrastructure monitoring, digital modeling, predictive maintenance, automated construction, structural health monitoring, and integrated infrastructure management. The analysis indicates that technology-enabled infrastructure models can improve monitoring capabilities, operational efficiency, maintenance planning, resource utilization, safety, and resilience. However, implementation remains constrained by high deployment costs, interoperability limitations, cybersecurity risks, data-management challenges, technological complexity, and shortages of specialized technical expertise.
Future research should investigate integrated digital twins, artificial intelligence-based predictive systems, autonomous infrastructure monitoring, advanced sensing, sustainable engineering models, and resilient cyber-physical infrastructure. A coordinated engineering framework that combines physical infrastructure with digital intelligence can provide a foundation for more adaptive, efficient, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure systems.
