| Abstract | Intelligent Internet of Things architectures have become an important technological foundation for developing connected smart environments across industrial, residential, healthcare, transportation, energy, and urban applications. Modern IoT architectures integrate sensing devices, communication networks, edge and cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data analytics, security mechanisms, and intelligent control to facilitate continuous interaction between physical and digital environments. This paper examines intelligent IoT architectures for connected smart environments through a conceptual and literature-based approach. The study focuses on architectural layers, intelligent data processing, edge-cloud integration, interoperability, real-time communication, automation, security, and adaptive decision-making. The analysis indicates that intelligent IoT architectures can improve connectivity, environmental monitoring, operational visibility, resource management, automation, and context-aware decision-making. Edge computing can additionally support low-latency processing by moving computational capabilities closer to connected devices, while cloud platforms provide scalable storage and computational resources. However, IoT deployment remains affected by heterogeneous devices, interoperability limitations, cybersecurity threats, privacy concerns, data quality, network dependency, computational constraints, and implementation costs. The study concludes that effective connected smart environments require integrated and scalable IoT architectures that combine intelligent processing, secure communication, interoperable technologies, distributed computing, and appropriate governance. Future research should emphasize autonomous IoT systems, AI-enabled edge intelligence, digital twins, secure architectures, semantic interoperability, energy-efficient devices, and human-centered smart environments. |
