| Abstract | Smart home technologies have emerged as an important application of the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling household devices, sensors, appliances, security systems, and energy-management platforms to communicate and operate through connected digital environments. IoT-based smart homes can provide automated control, remote monitoring, intelligent decision-making, energy optimization, security management, and improved household convenience. This study examines smart home technologies using IoT applications, focusing on connected devices, sensing technologies, communication infrastructure, intelligent automation, energy management, home security, and user-oriented services. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis indicates that IoT applications can transform conventional homes into interconnected environments capable of collecting real-time information and responding to changing household conditions. Smart sensors can monitor temperature, lighting, occupancy, energy consumption, and security conditions, while cloud computing and edge processing can support data management and rapid responses. Artificial intelligence can further improve automation by learning household patterns and supporting predictive control. Despite these benefits, smart home adoption is affected by cybersecurity vulnerabilities, privacy concerns, interoperability limitations, implementation costs, network dependency, and user complexity. The study concludes that IoT-enabled smart home technologies can improve household efficiency, convenience, security, and resource management when supported by secure, interoperable, reliable, and user-centered architectures. Future research should emphasize privacy-preserving intelligence, energy-efficient IoT devices, autonomous home management, edge computing, interoperability standards, and sustainable smart home ecosystems. |
