| Abstract | Intelligent sensor-based networks are becoming an important technological foundation for future smart applications by enabling distributed sensing, real-time communication, data processing, and intelligent decision-making. The integration of sensors with wireless communication, Internet of Things technologies, edge computing, artificial intelligence, and cloud platforms allows physical environments to be continuously monitored and dynamically managed. This study examines intelligent sensor-based networks for future smart applications, focusing on sensor architectures, wireless connectivity, data processing, intelligent analytics, distributed decision-making, and application-oriented functionality. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis indicates that intelligent sensor networks can support smart cities, healthcare, agriculture, industrial systems, transportation, environmental monitoring, and smart buildings by providing continuous and context-aware information. Sensor fusion and intelligent analytics can improve data interpretation, while edge computing can enable low-latency processing and reduce unnecessary data transmission. However, deployment remains affected by challenges related to energy consumption, network scalability, data quality, interoperability, cybersecurity, privacy, and system reliability. The study concludes that intelligent sensor-based networks can provide a flexible infrastructure for future smart applications when sensing, communication, processing, and intelligence are effectively integrated. Future research should emphasize energy-efficient sensing, intelligent edge processing, secure communication, adaptive networking, interoperable architectures, and context-aware artificial intelligence. |
