Smart Agriculture Systems Using IoT-Based Monitoring

Author(s) Prof. Steven R. Biggs

Abstract Smart agriculture has emerged as an important application of digital technologies for improving agricultural monitoring, resource management, crop productivity, and decision-making. Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring systems enable agricultural environments to be observed through interconnected sensors, communication networks, data platforms, and intelligent analytical tools. These systems can monitor soil moisture, temperature, humidity, light intensity, water conditions, and other parameters that influence crop development.
This paper examines smart agriculture systems using IoT-based monitoring through a conceptual and literature-based research approach. The study focuses on sensor-based monitoring, wireless communication, cloud platforms, data analytics, automated irrigation, environmental monitoring, and intelligent agricultural decision support. The analysis demonstrates that IoT-based monitoring can improve the availability of timely field information and support more informed management of irrigation, crop conditions, and agricultural resources.
However, implementation is influenced by challenges including sensor reliability, connectivity limitations, energy requirements, infrastructure costs, data management, cybersecurity, technical skills, and environmental conditions. The study emphasizes that IoT-based agriculture should be designed as an integrated monitoring ecosystem rather than as isolated sensing devices. Future research should investigate artificial intelligence-enabled agriculture, edge computing, low-power IoT networks, predictive crop monitoring, digital twins, autonomous agricultural systems, and sustainable resource management. The findings highlight the potential of IoT-based monitoring to contribute to data-driven, efficient, adaptive, and sustainable agricultural management.
