| Abstract | The expansion of Internet of Things technologies has significantly transformed smart infrastructure by enabling physical assets, sensors, devices, communication networks, and digital platforms to exchange information continuously. Effective communication models are essential for ensuring reliable connectivity, efficient data transmission, interoperability, scalability, and responsive infrastructure management. This study examines advanced IoT communication models for smart infrastructure, focusing on communication architectures, wireless and wired connectivity, edge-enabled communication, protocol integration, network efficiency, scalability, and intelligent data exchange. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis indicates that heterogeneous communication technologies can support different smart-infrastructure requirements according to coverage, bandwidth, latency, energy consumption, reliability, and deployment conditions. Edge-enabled communication can reduce unnecessary data transmission by processing selected information closer to infrastructure assets, while standardized protocols can improve interoperability among heterogeneous devices. Advanced communication models can support smart cities, transportation systems, energy networks, buildings, water management, and industrial infrastructure. However, challenges remain concerning network congestion, interoperability, security, privacy, energy constraints, infrastructure complexity, scalability, and communication reliability. The study concludes that future smart infrastructure requires flexible and multilayered IoT communication models integrating suitable connectivity technologies, standardized protocols, edge computing, intelligent network management, and security mechanisms. Such models can improve the efficiency, resilience, responsiveness, and sustainability of connected infrastructure environments. |
