Abstract IoT-based energy management systems have emerged as an important approach for monitoring, controlling, and optimizing energy consumption across smart buildings, homes, industries, transportation systems, and distributed energy infrastructures. The integration of Internet of Things devices with smart meters, sensors, communication networks, edge computing, cloud platforms, and intelligent analytics enables continuous collection and processing of energy-related information. This study examines IoT-based energy management systems for smart applications, focusing on real-time monitoring, demand management, intelligent control, predictive analytics, renewable energy integration, and automated decision-making.
A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis demonstrates that IoT technologies can improve energy visibility by providing continuous information about consumption patterns, equipment performance, load conditions, and operational requirements. Intelligent analytics can support demand forecasting, anomaly detection, load optimization, and energy scheduling, while edge computing can facilitate rapid local decisions. IoT-based energy management can also support renewable energy resources by coordinating generation, storage, and consumption.
However, implementation challenges include cybersecurity, data privacy, interoperability, network reliability, energy consumption of IoT devices, scalability, and system complexity. The study concludes that IoT-based energy management systems can contribute to efficient and intelligent energy utilization when sensing, communication, analytics, automation, and security are integrated effectively. Future research should emphasize AI-enabled energy optimization, edge intelligence, interoperable platforms, privacy-preserving analytics, energy-efficient sensing, and adaptive demand-management mechanisms.
