Abstract Smart transportation systems are increasingly being developed through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, intelligent sensors, connected vehicles, communication networks, cloud computing, edge computing, and data analytics. These technologies enable transportation infrastructure and vehicles to collect, exchange, and process information in real time, supporting improved mobility, traffic management, safety, and operational efficiency. This paper examines smart transportation systems using IoT technologies through a conceptual and literature-based research approach.
The study focuses on connected vehicles, intelligent traffic management, real-time monitoring, smart parking, public transportation, transportation safety, predictive maintenance, and intelligent mobility services. The analysis indicates that IoT-based transportation systems can support continuous data collection, dynamic traffic monitoring, improved resource utilization, and responsive transportation management. However, implementation remains affected by challenges including cybersecurity, privacy, communication reliability, interoperability, infrastructure costs, data management, device limitations, and integration with existing transportation systems.
The study emphasizes the importance of integrated IoT architectures combining sensors, communication networks, edge and cloud computing, intelligent analytics, and transportation management platforms. Future research should investigate intelligent traffic prediction, vehicle-to-everything communication, edge-based transportation analytics, autonomous mobility, privacy-preserving data processing, digital twins, and sustainable IoT-enabled transportation infrastructure. The study concludes that IoT technologies can provide a strong technological foundation for developing safer, more efficient, responsive, connected, and sustainable smart transportation systems when supported by reliable infrastructure, secure communication, interoperable platforms, and effective data governance.
