Abstract Smart grid technologies are transforming conventional electricity networks into intelligent, connected, and responsive energy systems through the integration of advanced communication, sensing, automation, distributed energy resources, and data management technologies. Internet of Things (IoT)-based management systems provide an important foundation for smart grid development by enabling real-time monitoring, information exchange, predictive analysis, demand management, and intelligent operational control. This paper examines smart grid technologies using IoT-based management systems through a conceptual and literature-based research approach.
The study focuses on smart meters, IoT sensors, communication networks, distributed energy resources, demand response, predictive maintenance, energy monitoring, fault detection, and intelligent grid management. The analysis indicates that IoT-enabled smart grids can improve operational visibility, support real-time energy management, facilitate integration of renewable energy resources, and strengthen decision-making. Edge and cloud computing can provide complementary capabilities for processing large volumes of grid data, while artificial intelligence can support forecasting, anomaly detection, and optimization. However, implementation is associated with challenges involving cybersecurity, privacy, interoperability, communication reliability, infrastructure costs, data management, and system scalability.
The study emphasizes the importance of integrated IoT architectures that connect sensing devices, smart meters, communication networks, edge and cloud platforms, analytics systems, and grid management applications. Future research should investigate AI-enabled grid optimization, digital twins, decentralized energy management, secure IoT communication, edge intelligence, renewable energy integration, and intelligent demand response. The study concludes that IoT-based management systems can provide a strong technological foundation for developing reliable, efficient, adaptive, and intelligent smart grids when supported by secure communication, interoperable infrastructure, accurate data, and effective energy management practices.
