Advanced Wireless Sensor Networks for Intelligent Monitoring

Author(s) Dr. Daniel Fischer

Abstract Advanced wireless sensor networks have become an important technological foundation for intelligent monitoring because they enable distributed sensing, wireless communication, real-time data collection, and automated interpretation across diverse environments. The integration of wireless sensor nodes with artificial intelligence, edge computing, Internet of Things technologies, cloud platforms, and advanced analytics has expanded the capabilities of monitoring systems beyond conventional data acquisition. This study examines advanced wireless sensor networks for intelligent monitoring, focusing on network architecture, sensing technologies, communication mechanisms, intelligent data processing, energy management, anomaly detection, and real-time monitoring applications.
A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis indicates that wireless sensor networks can provide continuous information from physical environments and support intelligent monitoring in industrial, environmental, agricultural, healthcare, infrastructure, and smart-city applications. Distributed sensor nodes can capture temperature, pressure, vibration, motion, humidity, air quality, and other parameters, while intelligent analytical mechanisms can identify patterns and abnormal conditions. Edge computing can reduce communication latency and support local decision-making, whereas cloud platforms can provide scalable storage and advanced analysis.
However, network reliability, energy limitations, communication security, data quality, scalability, interoperability, and computational constraints remain important challenges. The study concludes that advanced wireless sensor networks require coordinated integration of sensing, communication, intelligent processing, and energy-aware network management. Future research should emphasize energy-efficient protocols, AI-enabled anomaly detection, edge intelligence, secure communication, self-organizing networks, intelligent routing, and sustainable sensor architectures for reliable and scalable monitoring applications.
