Biomedical Information Systems for Intelligent Healthcare Management

Author(s) Tobias Kowatsch

Abstract Biomedical information systems have become an important foundation for intelligent healthcare management by enabling the systematic collection, integration, storage, processing, and analysis of biomedical and clinical information. The integration of electronic health records, laboratory information, medical imaging, biomedical sensors, healthcare databases, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, and decision-support technologies provides opportunities to improve clinical coordination and healthcare management. This study examines biomedical information systems for intelligent healthcare management, with particular emphasis on information integration, clinical decision support, patient monitoring, biomedical data analysis, healthcare resource management, and intelligent service delivery. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis indicates that biomedical information systems can improve healthcare management by connecting clinical information with analytical and administrative processes.
Integrated systems can support timely access to patient information, assist disease identification, facilitate personalized care, improve monitoring, and strengthen healthcare resource planning. Artificial intelligence and machine learning can further enhance information processing and predictive capabilities. However, implementation is affected by challenges involving data quality, interoperability, privacy, cybersecurity, system complexity, clinical validation, cost, and workforce readiness. The study concludes that biomedical information systems can support intelligent healthcare management when developed through interoperable, secure, clinically appropriate, and patient-centered frameworks. Future research should investigate intelligent biomedical data integration, explainable artificial intelligence, real-time analytics, secure health information exchange, personalized healthcare systems, and advanced decision-support platforms.
