Digital Knowledge Management Systems for Academic Development

Author(s) Dr. Marco De Marco
Country Italy
Abstract Digital knowledge management systems have become important components of contemporary academic environments by enabling educational institutions to collect, organize, preserve, share, and utilize knowledge through interconnected digital platforms. Academic institutions generate substantial amounts of knowledge through teaching, research, administration, collaboration, publications, learning activities, and institutional experience. Effective management of this knowledge can support academic development, improve organizational learning, facilitate collaboration, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making. This study examines digital knowledge management systems for academic development through a conceptual and literature-based research design.
The study focuses on digital repositories, learning management systems, institutional knowledge bases, cloud platforms, collaborative technologies, academic databases, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and knowledge-sharing platforms. The analysis identifies the major functions of digital knowledge management, including knowledge creation, acquisition, storage, retrieval, dissemination, application, and continuous improvement. Digital knowledge management systems can improve access to academic resources, facilitate collaboration among faculty and students, preserve institutional knowledge, and support research productivity.
However, implementation challenges include information overload, data quality, cybersecurity, privacy, interoperability, digital literacy, resistance to organizational change, infrastructure requirements, and long-term sustainability. The study proposes an integrated framework connecting knowledge creation, digital capture, storage, intelligent retrieval, collaboration, knowledge application, and academic development outcomes. The findings indicate that digital knowledge management can strengthen academic ecosystems when technological systems are aligned with institutional objectives, user requirements, knowledge-sharing practices, and appropriate governance mechanisms.
