Strategic Technology Management for Competitive Advantage

| Abstract | Strategic technology management has become an important component of contemporary organizational strategy as businesses operate within increasingly digital, competitive, and rapidly changing environments. The effective management of technological resources enables organizations to improve operational efficiency, develop innovative products and services, strengthen customer relationships, optimize resources, and respond to changing market conditions. This study examines strategic technology management for competitive advantage by focusing on technology strategy, digital transformation, innovation capabilities, organizational resources, data analytics, artificial intelligence, technological infrastructure, and managerial capabilities. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis identifies technological capability, strategic alignment, organizational agility, innovation capacity, knowledge management, leadership support, employee competencies, and technology investment as important elements of strategic technology management. Digital technologies can strengthen competitive capabilities by supporting process automation, predictive decision-making, customer personalization, supply-chain coordination, and new business models. However, technological investment alone does not necessarily create sustainable competitive advantage. Organizations must effectively integrate technologies with organizational resources, business strategies, human capabilities, and market requirements. Major implementation challenges include high investment costs, technological complexity, cybersecurity threats, data-quality problems, skills shortages, legacy systems, employee resistance, and rapid technological obsolescence. The study emphasizes the importance of technology roadmaps, strategic alignment, continuous innovation, digital capability development, and systematic technology evaluation. Effective strategic technology management requires organizations to view technology as an integrated strategic resource rather than merely an operational support function. The study provides a conceptual foundation for understanding how organizations can manage technological resources strategically to strengthen innovation, organizational adaptability, operational capabilities, and competitive positioning. |
