| Abstract | The increasing complexity of environmental challenges has created a need for monitoring systems capable of providing accurate, continuous, and geographically distributed information. Conventional environmental monitoring approaches often depend on periodic observations, laboratory analysis, and manually collected measurements, which can limit the speed of environmental response. The Internet of Things (IoT) provides an advanced technological framework for environmental monitoring by connecting sensors, communication networks, cloud platforms, edge-computing systems, and analytical applications. This study examines advanced environmental monitoring using IoT, with emphasis on real-time sensing, environmental data acquisition, intelligent analytics, remote monitoring, automated alerts, and resource-management applications. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The analysis examines IoT applications in air-quality monitoring, water-quality assessment, soil monitoring, waste management, biodiversity observation, weather monitoring, and smart environmental management. IoT sensors can continuously collect environmental information and transmit data to centralized or distributed platforms for analysis. Artificial intelligence and machine-learning techniques can further support anomaly detection, prediction, environmental risk assessment, and automated decision-making. However, IoT-based environmental monitoring faces challenges involving sensor accuracy, connectivity, energy consumption, data security, interoperability, maintenance, infrastructure costs, and large-scale data management. The study emphasizes integrated IoT monitoring models that combine sensing, communication, edge and cloud computing, analytics, visualization, and automated environmental response. Future research should investigate energy-efficient sensors, intelligent edge analytics, AI-enabled environmental prediction, low-power communication networks, autonomous monitoring systems, interoperability standards, and scalable IoT architectures for environmental protection. Such developments can strengthen environmental observation and provide timely information for sustainable environmental management. |
