Digital Technologies for Environmental Sustainability Management

Author(s) Dr. Andreas Möller

Abstract Digital technologies are increasingly transforming environmental sustainability management by enabling real-time monitoring, predictive analysis, resource optimization, environmental reporting, and evidence-based decision-making. Growing pressures related to climate change, resource depletion, pollution, waste generation, biodiversity loss, and inefficient resource consumption require organizations and communities to adopt more responsive environmental-management approaches. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things devices, remote sensing, geographic information systems, cloud computing, big-data analytics, blockchain, digital twins, and smart sensing platforms can support the collection and analysis of environmental information.
This study examines the role of digital technologies in environmental sustainability management through a conceptual and descriptive research approach. The study focuses on digital environmental monitoring, resource optimization, pollution management, waste management, energy efficiency, water-resource management, biodiversity monitoring, sustainable supply chains, and environmental performance assessment. An integrated framework is developed connecting environmental data acquisition, data processing, intelligent analytics, sustainability decision-making, technology implementation, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement.
The analysis indicates that digital technologies can strengthen environmental monitoring, improve resource-use efficiency, support predictive decision-making, enhance transparency, and facilitate timely responses to environmental changes. However, implementation can be constrained by data-quality problems, high infrastructure costs, cybersecurity risks, interoperability limitations, technical skill shortages, digital inequality, privacy concerns, and the environmental footprint of digital infrastructure. Effective digital sustainability management therefore requires integration of technological systems with environmental governance, organizational capabilities, lifecycle assessment, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder participation.
