Abstract Smart future communities require integrated sustainability models capable of balancing environmental protection, technological advancement, economic development, social well-being, and resilient community planning. Rapid urbanization, resource consumption, climate change, infrastructure pressures, and digital transformation have created new requirements for community development. Advanced sustainability models can support these requirements through smart energy systems, intelligent water management, digital infrastructure, circular economy practices, sustainable mobility, green buildings, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things technologies, and data-driven community governance. This study examines advanced sustainability models for smart future communities through a conceptual and descriptive research approach.
The study focuses on integrating digital technologies with sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, resource efficiency, environmental monitoring, climate resilience, circular systems, intelligent mobility, and community participation. An integrated sustainability framework is proposed connecting community assessment, sustainability planning, digital technologies, resource optimization, smart infrastructure, environmental monitoring, social participation, resilience evaluation, and continuous improvement. The analysis indicates that smart technologies can improve resource management, energy efficiency, environmental monitoring, mobility, infrastructure performance, and community services. Artificial intelligence and advanced analytics can support predictive decision-making, while IoT systems can provide real-time information about energy, water, waste, transportation, and environmental conditions. Renewable energy and smart-grid technologies can support cleaner energy systems, whereas circular economy practices can reduce material consumption and waste.
However, implementation may be constrained by financial requirements, digital inequality, infrastructure limitations, cybersecurity concerns, data governance, technical skills shortages, privacy issues, and technological dependence. Sustainable smart-community development therefore requires interdisciplinary planning, inclusive governance, lifecycle assessment, green investment, digital literacy, appropriate infrastructure, transparent data practices, and stakeholder participation. Future research should examine adaptive smart-community platforms, AI-enabled sustainability management, digital twins, decentralized renewable energy, intelligent mobility, smart water networks, circular community systems, and participatory digital governance. The proposed model provides a structured foundation for developing smart communities that are environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, technologically adaptive, economically viable, and resilient to future challenges.
