Digital Innovation Strategies for Sustainable Development Goals

Author(s) Dr. Alexander J. Murray
Country United Kingdom
Abstract Digital innovation has become increasingly relevant to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by enabling new approaches to resource management, service delivery, environmental monitoring, education, healthcare, economic development, and social inclusion. Technologies including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, blockchain, cloud computing, big-data analytics, digital platforms, and geographic information systems can support evidence-based decision-making and improve the efficiency of sustainable-development initiatives. This study examines digital innovation strategies that can contribute to SDG implementation, with particular attention to intelligent governance, environmental sustainability, inclusive economic development, digital public services, and resource optimization.
A qualitative descriptive research design was adopted using secondary academic literature and thematic analysis. The analysis indicates that digital innovation can strengthen SDG implementation by improving data availability, operational efficiency, transparency, monitoring capabilities, and stakeholder coordination. Digital platforms can support access to education, healthcare, financial services, and public administration, while intelligent environmental technologies can improve energy, water, waste, and ecosystem management. However, digital transformation also presents challenges related to the digital divide, cybersecurity, data privacy, infrastructure requirements, technological inequality, organizational capacity, and the environmental footprint of digital systems.
Effective digital innovation strategies therefore require inclusive infrastructure, responsible technology governance, digital skills development, interoperability, transparent data practices, and sustainability-oriented investment. Future research should examine AI-enabled SDG monitoring, digital twins, inclusive digital platforms, green computing, interoperable data ecosystems, and context-sensitive digital innovation frameworks. Integrating technological advancement with social, economic, and environmental priorities can strengthen the contribution of digital innovation to sustainable development.
