| Abstract | Sustainable engineering has become increasingly important for developing infrastructure that can respond to environmental pressures, resource limitations, urban expansion, and long-term socioeconomic requirements. Conventional infrastructure development has often prioritized construction efficiency and immediate economic returns, whereas sustainable engineering incorporates environmental performance, resource efficiency, resilience, lifecycle considerations, and social value into infrastructure planning and design. This study examines sustainable engineering approaches for green infrastructure development, focusing on renewable energy integration, energy-efficient design, sustainable materials, water management, circular construction, intelligent infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and lifecycle assessment. A qualitative descriptive and conceptual research design was adopted using secondary academic literature. The study analyzes how engineering innovations can improve infrastructure efficiency while reducing resource consumption, environmental impacts, waste generation, and operational costs. Green infrastructure approaches can integrate natural systems with engineered solutions through urban green spaces, sustainable drainage systems, green buildings, renewable-energy systems, ecological corridors, and water-sensitive infrastructure. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things systems, building information modelling, digital twins, and environmental sensors can further improve infrastructure monitoring and optimization. However, implementation involves challenges including high initial investment, technological complexity, regulatory limitations, maintenance requirements, limited technical expertise, material availability, and difficulties in assessing long-term environmental performance. The study emphasizes integrated engineering frameworks that combine lifecycle thinking, sustainable materials, renewable energy, circular resource management, intelligent technologies, and nature-based approaches. Such frameworks can support resilient infrastructure development while improving environmental performance and resource efficiency. Future research should focus on advanced sustainable materials, digital infrastructure management, climate-resilient engineering, lifecycle optimization, circular construction systems, and integrated nature-based solutions to strengthen the sustainability of future infrastructure. |
